What Is Zakat?

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam and a mandatory act of worship for eligible Muslims. It purifies wealth and helps support the poor, needy, and vulnerable members of society. By giving Zakat, you fulfill a religious duty and help restore balance and compassion in the community. Zakat is not only a financial obligation but also a powerful system of social justice in Islam. It ensures that wealth circulates within society and reaches those who are struggling to meet their basic needs. Through Zakat, communities are strengthened, poverty is reduced, and social harmony is promoted.

By fulfilling Zakat with sincerity and proper intention, believers earn immense spiritual rewards while contributing to a fairer and more compassionate society. It is an act of worship that benefits both the giver and the receiver, creating balance and mercy within the community.

Zakat in the Light of the Qur’an

The Qur’an repeatedly commands believers to give Zakat as an essential act of worship and social responsibility. Zakat purifies wealth, supports the poor, and strengthens justice and compassion within society. It is a means through which Allah blesses wealth and promotes balance among people.

“And establish prayer and give Zakat.”
(Qur’an 2:110)

Zakat in the Light of Hadith

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasized the importance of Zakat as a means of purification and social responsibility. He taught that giving Zakat purifies wealth and protects it from harm, while neglecting it leads to loss and accountability. Zakat strengthens compassion, supports the needy, and reflects true faith in action.

“Wealth is not decreased by charity.”
(Sahih Muslim)

How to Calculate Zakat?

Step 1: Check Your Assets

“Add the total value of your eligible assets, including gold & silver, cash, business profits, stocks, bonds, and other investments. Include wealth held for a full lunar year.”

Step 2: Subtract Liabilities

Deduct any immediate debts or liabilities, such as loans or money you owe that must be paid within the next year. Zakat is calculated on your **net wealth**, not on what you owe others.

Step 3: Compare with Nisab

“Nisab is the minimum wealth required to pay Zakat. If your net wealth exceeds Nisab, you must give 2.5% to help circulate wealth within the community.”
